Our client is a NYC based University.

The Director of Advancement will work as part of a team of fundraisers. This is a unique time to join the Institutional Advancement (IA) team at the University.

The team in this division of the University currently raises $4M annually and is poised for growth as it builds out a best in class major gift program. To grow the major gifts campaign, our client is instituting focused fundraising initiatives and is committed to growing the philanthropic pipeline with the introduction of new technologies and support for its major gift directors and philanthropic advisors.  The new Director of Advancement will join an IA department that prides itself on teamwork, integrity, accountability, and respect.

Key responsibilities in this position include:

  • Cultivate and solicit gifts from Board members, alumni, parents and other prospects.
  • In close consultation with IA leadership and the Dean of the Division, the Director will develop short- and long-term strategy for donor cultivation, solicitation, engagement and stewardship for assigned prospects. Using data, research, knowledge of the prospects obtained through personal meetings, and information from faculty and lay leaders, create individual strategies designed to achieve maximum gift potential.
  • Manage a specific portfolio of major gift prospects aligned with priority fundraising initiatives in order to accomplish meaningful prospect interactions throughout each phase of the prospect management process.
  • Develop new strategies and initiatives based on a comprehensive analysis to increase the number of prospects under active management.
  • Work in a highly collaborative fashion and in conjunction with the Deans, colleagues, faculty, staff, and other senior leadership to identify, cultivate and solicit donors.
  • Prepare solicitation materials, including proposals and executive summaries.
  • Ensure maintenance of appropriate records in the fundraising database in a timely manner.
  • Conduct a minimum of 150 personal visits annually to validate, cultivate, and solicit prospects and close gifts.
  • Be a strong contributing member of the IA team and work in concert with others for the overall success of the department.
  • Aggressively seek new major gift prospects through referrals and information gleaned from alumni, current donors, parents and friends of the colleges.
  • Oversee direct marketing and annual fund. Work with Office of Alumni Affairs re: solicitation letters to contributors and alumni
  • Coordinate all aspects of all related development functions. These include dinners, luncheons and receptions (catering, invitations, journals, follow-up, seating, etc.).

Experience and Educational Background:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of five years of experience in front-line fundraising for institution of higher education or other complex nonprofit organization.
  • Proven track record of securing substantial gifts

Skills and Competencies

  • Proven track record of soliciting and closing substantial gifts.
  • Ability to maintain high-standards of quality and productivity, focusing on results.
  • Demonstrate strong initiative, creative problem-solving, and the ability to work independently, yet collaboratively.
  • Multi-task oriented with the ability to prioritize a diverse workload.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including the ability to edit and proofread, as well as articulate a powerful case for support of the University’s unique mission.
  • Presence and ability to represent the University to its multiple constituencies.
  • Experience managing small and large special events, from parlor meetings to gala dinners.
  • Oversee direct marketing and annual giving.
  • Outgoing personality with willingness to share information and listen, as well as give advice.
  • High level of personal motivation, initiative and creativity.
