Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey is a non-profit philanthropic organization dedicated to creating a vibrant Jewish community in northern New Jersey. Federation cares for those in need, deepens engagement in Jewish life, and strengthens the bonds among Jews in northern New Jersey area, in Israel, and around the world. Its primary functions are community planning and allocations, financial resource development, and leadership development.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Director of Major Gifts (DMG) is responsible for the overall management of Jewish Federation’s expanding Major Gifts program and serves as a leader on the Financial Resource Development team. This position focuses on identifying new prospects, cultivating meaningful relationships, and securing capacity gifts from donors capable of making a minimum yearly commitment of $10,000.

The DMG will be expected to develop a Major Gifts campaign plan that moves management strategy and addresses:  events, assignments, lay solicitor oversight, step up strategies, and tracking to create an increased Major Gifts annual campaign as well as supplemental giving opportunities for Major Donors.  This includes all recognition levels such as the Joshua Society, King David Society, etc.

The DMG will manage a personal portfolio of prospects, as well as supervise and mentor selected staff. This individual will develop and implement a strategy for Major Gift fundraising across northern NJ as well as for our Major Donors who live or work in Florida and/or Manhattan. The DMG will work closely with all development staff as well as key volunteer solicitors to promote the acquisition of major and planned gifts to Jewish Federation’s strategic funding priorities.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist COO in developing and implementing strategic plans for the FRD Department, including building the pipeline of Major Gift prospects and expanding the community of support around Jewish Federation’s philanthropic priorities.
  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward prospective donors, managing a personal portfolio of 80 to 100 donors and prospects.
  • Pursue and succeed in scheduling face-to-face conversations and solicitations.
  • Plan and execute giving level events:  Major Gifts Dinner (or similar event) for $10,000+ households and King David Society event for $25,000+ household contributors.
  • Work closely with CEO, COO, Campaign Chair(s), and President to prepare them for donor meetings and manage the pipeline of major prospects.
  • Collaborate with Director of Marketing to develop written proposals and key communications pieces for Major Donors, including Annual and Supplemental giving opportunities.
  • Conduct prospect research and develop leads from others within Jewish Federation, and from the broader philanthropic community in northern NJ.
  • Work in coordination with Endowment department to maximize a donor’s impact in his/her lifetime and beyond through legacy and Donor Advised Fund opportunities.
  • Coordinate an effective program for recognition, involvement, and stewardship of major and special gift donors in coordination with the Chief Operating Officer and the FRD staff focused on stewardship experiences.
  • Staff missions for high net worth prospects and donors to showcase work of Federation and cultivate relationships between participants and professional staff.
  • Manage special projects as requested.
  • Carry out relevant responsibilities as determined by COO.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in a major resource development role.
  • Successful track record with personal solicitation in the $10K – $100K range.
  • Significant fundraising experience within the Jewish communal field, or another similar organization requiring sophisticated fundraising efforts.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the complexity of the volunteer/professional relationship and success managing those relationships in an effective and professional manner.
  • Strong management and leadership skills.
  • Capacity to manage confidential information; use discretion and good judgment.
  • Ability to manage complex, sensitive issues and situations with tact and great skill.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently, but also integrate and lead teams.
  • Previous experience with fundraising databases and the ability to utilize data strategically.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and writing skills.
  • Personal commitment to Jewish values and knowledge of Jewish traditions.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and some Sundays.
  • Must be able to travel, including internationally, when needed.
