Interviewing with Your Favorite Sports Team
Author: Lavie Margolin, Career Coach
We all have our interests and pastimes. More than a handful of us
have imagined working for the very same organization or company that
produces our favorite movies, television shows or owns our favorite
sports team. Wouldn’t it be fun to apply your skills as a Helpdesk
Technician, Accountant or CFO for the pin striped baseball team in
the Bronx or the production company of last summer’s blockbuster?
I remember writing several cover letters to my favorite team
as a college freshman.
When applying to a job at a company that is strongly of interest to
us, our interviews can often veer off path. Of course every company,
big and small, wants to know that we understand their business and
have an understanding of their industry but remember what you are
trying to sell. Instead of explaining our skills, abilities and
experience relative to the position we are applying for, we gush
about our fandom and passion for that company.
High profile organizations have millions of fans. They are not
looking to hire their number one fan. They are looking to find a
qualified Accountant, IT professional or Benefits Administrator.
Focus your time on proving your qualifications for the job opening
and leave the team logo baseball cap at home. About the Author: Lavie Margolin is a New York-based Career Coach and the author of Lion Cub Job Search: Practical Job Search Assistance for Practical Job Seekers. To learn more, go to Lavie’s website, Lion Cub Job Search: www.Lioncubjobsearch.com |
